There is a lot of special legislation regarding elections, which is there for good reason. However, I feel that the Waitaki District Council is taking it a bit far when it forbids its employees from showing support for any particular candidate.
It has taken it several steps further with council employees being advised that they cannot "like" a Facebook page like this one. Not only... are their rules outdated (not everyone who likes a page necessarily supports the cause), but they are actually preventing staff members, who are often ratepayers themselves, access to information which may help them decide who to vote for!
This is a ridiculous situation which needs addressed because even central government, which created the legislation, does not require the same of its employees during a general election...
That's my gripe for the week, carry on!
